Preparing Your AC for Spring

Preparing Your A/C for Spring

After a freezing and incredibly long winter, it feels good to finally take a step outside. Spring is also the right time of year to start over with different aspects of your life, get rid of unnecessary “stuff” and protect the integrity of your home and those who live in it, by checking the condition of your home’s HVAC system. Preparing Your AC for Spring is one of those things that could slip your mind. Whether you like to admit it or not, HVAC issues can arise when the snow begins to melt. It’s quite usual to have issues with your home cooling system, especially after the long and chilly Alberta winter break.

But, do not fear! Springtime HVAC problems are usually very preventable if you take proper care of your system. Typically, issues that can come up with your unit often occur when you turn on the air conditioner for the first time at the start of spring (whenever that might happen in Alberta). Most of the time, it’s just a gentle reminder that your home’s air system requires attention before the warm Alberta summer season (eventually) kicks in… even if it feels like it can’t come fast enough!

In this month’s blog, the Ignite Heating team unpacks three common spring HVAC problems that can occur when that heavy snow finally melts. Check it out below:

Air Conditioner Repair
Spring AC repair is an important part of home maintenance.

Don’t forget about the dirty coils!

One of the biggest problems with system malfunctions is a dirty coil. Your air conditioner has an indoor evaporator coil and a condenser coil in the outdoor unit. The unit that rests outside of your home can easily become dirty because it is constantly exposed to the weather elements. Items that are common outside such as branches, dirt and grass clippings can make their way into the unit. This debris can affect the coils in the long run. Many components in your AC system are delicate, so it’s best to leave major cleaning to the professionals who are seasoned in HVAC maintenance.

Most of these components are delicate in nature, so it’s always a good idea to contact an expert HVAC service company and let them solve these issues. The internal evaporator coil is, undoubtedly, multi-complex and will require a professional technician for effective cleaning.

Ductwork problems are rough… and very common.

Ductwork problems are the hardest to identify simply because much, if not all, of them are out of view. Ducts can separate or leak over time, causing cool air to escape. This can lead to higher electricity costs to run your AC. They can also get clogged with dirt and debris, so it’s important to get them cleaned when necessary.

Winter was tough and you forgot about your filter replacement!

Although it may seem like a simple task, most households forget to change old filters, which leads to significant issues with the HVAC units. If your air conditioner experiences regular problems like overheating, it may be because the filter is clogged with dirt, dust, and debris. Make sure to check the filter regularly for possible contamination, and don’t forget to replace the filter frequently throughout the upcoming summer season. This ensures the efficient functioning of your HVAC system.
