Prepare Your HVAC System For Fall

Yes, it’s the dreaded F-word. We are talking about FALL. It will be here before we know it, and with the upcoming cool weather, you will want to make sure that your HVAC system is ready for the heat to kick on when you need it to. Most of the preparations that need to be done are very easy and only take a couple of minutes, but Ignite wants you to know just what you should be doing to make sure that your HVAC system is ready to go when you need it. So with the cool climate of fall right around the corner, now is the perfect time to start preparing your HVAC system for cooler weather. Follow these 4 steps to be prepared:

Step #1: Change Your Filter

Furnace filters need to be changed out frequently, and one of the best ways to prepare your HVAC system for fall is to install a new filter. Dirty furnace filters not only reduce the air quality in your home, but they also create blockages in your system, which can prevent clean air from getting into your home. To make sure that you aren’t overspending on your energy bills this fall, put a new filter in your HVAC system now. At Ignite we recommend changing your furnace filter every 3 months if you have a typical 1″ wide filter.

Step #2: Schedule Annual Maintenance

It is important that you schedule your annual HVAC maintenance on your furnace. With regular maintenance you can both increase efficiency and prepare for the cold weather ahead. If you have your furnace cleaned and checked you will enhance your system’s performance and a professional HVAC technician can optimize your unit for maximum output. This is also the perfect time for a qualified service tech to spot any potential problems or repairs that might need to be made—before the cold winter weather arrives. If you live in the Edmonton and surrounding area, an Ignite technician is available to inspect your unit to make sure everything is operating as it should be.

A furnace clean & check by Ignite Heating generally takes about an hour. During this time, one of our expert technicians will go through a checklist of items that will ensure that your furnace is running as efficiently and safely as possible. A few items on our comprehensive checklist include:

  • Flushing vent pipe and floor drains
  • Checking cold resistance of ignitor
  • Inspecting control board for discolorizution
  • Cleaning and/or replacing furnace filter
  • Checking operation of humidifier
  • Inspecting all electrical connections
  • Cleaning the flame sensor
  • Checking thermostat operation
  • Checking fresh air supply for combustion and ventilation
  • Removing, inspecting & cleaning vent cap
  • Inspecting ductwork

If you have any specific concerns about your furnace, a clean & check appointment is the perfect opportunity to brings these problems up. Our qualified HVAC technician can check to make sure that there are no issues or surprises ahead and can answer your questions.

Step #3: Check For Air Leaks

If you have leaks in your ductwork, windows, or doors, your HVAC system can’t work efficiently. Drafts in your home are a sign that there are leaks in your system. Make sure all of your windows and doors are properly sealed with caulk and weather-stripping. You can also fix leaky ductwork with aluminum tape. A professional HVAC technician can also help you make sure that your ductwork is properly sealed to enhance your system efficiency.

Step #4: Upgrade Your System

If there is a time of year to take a day off without needing heating or cooling, it’s during fall. Our temperatures tend to be mild in September, neither too hot nor too cold. So it’s the perfect weather to upgrade your furnace. It’s a great time of year for a free quote and get a new furnace installed in your home without any discomfort. So if your HVAC system is old and needs replacing, now is the perfect time to act.

At Ignite Heating & Air Conditioning Ltd., your comfort is our concern! Call us today at (780) 919-4916 for all your heating and cooling requests and inquiries. We have professional, friendly technicians who are ready to answer your questions and help you prepare for the season ahead.

HVAC Decisions Are Tough

Your furnace is one of the most important pieces of equipment in your home, especially during the winter. Unfortunately, most people don’t think about their home heating system until a problem occurs. And then when faced with urgent HVAC decisions they have not idea where to turn! Do you have confidence in yourself to take on the complicated repairs as a weekend DIY project? Are you willing to risk it or spend your whole weekend trying to do the repairs yourself? You could make the problem worse or put your loved ones in danger, especially during these cold winter months. If you are faced with tough HVAC decisions, we can help you figure out who to call.

Why An HVAC Repair Specialist?

Consider an experienced licensed HVAC contractor that has been doing air conditioner and heating system repairs for years in your community. We have seen almost all of the possible problems that can happen. Usually we only need to check out the system for a couple minutes before we have an idea of what is wrong. If you do the job yourself there is a very distinct possibility that you will misdiagnose the problem and waste a lot of of time fixing something that is not broken. Can you really trust the person on YouTube to know what is wrong with your HVAC system? Although some videos may help you with simple things like how to change your furnace filter, most repairs will be out of the scope of what can be covered in a video. Make sure you hire someone who can diagnose and repair your problem the right way.

Of course, you might not have the proper tools and equipment to fix your furnace or air conditioner because these tools are not found in the average person’s toolbox. HVAC repairs need to be done by professional technicians with specialized equipment and tools. We stock many parts in our mobile vans and carry the necessary tools to get the job done. If we don’t have the correct part we will source it and get it as soon as possible. Your HVAC decision can be made easier if you choose someone with the right tools and equipment to get the job done right.

Home Heating Emergency!

Congratulations, you survived the latest Alberta cold snap! Did your home heating system struggle? Could your furnace keep your home nice and warm? Did you suffer from a home heating emergency? Let’s look at the three most common HVAC heating emergencies that you might want to avoid next time we get a burst of cold Alberta winter weather.

⚠️ Emergency #1: Plugged Air Intake Vent

To work properly, your furnace needs adequate airflow. If your furnace is having problems starting, or seems to be trying to start but can’t, a blocked airflow from the intake pipe could be the culprit. Even if you aren’t having trouble with your furnace, it’s a good idea to check your intake before the cold weather arrives. Most often snow and ice are the typical causes for blocked air intake vents, and it’s a common reason to cause your furnace to stop running. Having a properly installed fresh air intake is the first step to improving your home’s indoor air quality. We suggest you double check that your fresh air intake is clean and free of snow and ice to keep your furnace running smoothly all winter.

⚠️ Emergency #2: Dirty Furnace Filter

How long has it been since you last changed your furnace filter? Replacing your filter on a regular schedule will keep your furnace working at it’s optimal performance. A clean air filter not only improves your indoor air quality, but it can also improve your heating and cooling system’s airflow and efficiency. This can help lower your utility bill and extend the life of your equipment. If your filter gets too dirty, it can block the return air flow to the furnace. It’s like putting a blanket over your head and asking you to breath normally! So change your filter on a schedule (hint: we recommend changing your filter every 3 months or as recommended by your equipment manufacturer manual) to keep your furnace running smoothly.

⚠️ Emergency #3: Failing Flame Sensor

No heat at all – during extreme winter weather this is the most troublesome home heating emergency! It can be alarming to wake up to no heat in your home. With the temperature dropping to dangerous levels at night this is definitely something you should avoid to keep your family safe and warm.

If your furnace keeps shutting down and cannot provide heat to the entire house, it may be because your flame sensor is failing. There are three signs of a bad flame sensor. First, the furnace starts working but then quickly shuts down – also known as “short cycling”. Second, there could be cracks in the porcelain of the flame sensor which can cause it to quit working properly. Finally, if the flame sensor is corroded or needs cleaning it could stop functioning all together.

Home Heating Repairs – A Common Winter Issue

Did you notice that our Alberta winter weather is here, and the temperature outside has dropped considerably? As a result you may be faced with some unavoidable home heating repairs! With this cold snap set to bring us record-setting -40 lows, our freezing winter weather presents some common challenges for the home heating system trying it’s best to keep you warm. Let’s take a closer look at a few common winter home heating repairs:

Inconsistent Heat – Home Heating Repair #1

Most likely you prefer your whole house to be heated evenly. Generally each room should be comfortably warm. However, a malfunctioning heating system could be causing one room to be chilly while another room feels hot. To prevent this from happening you can make sure your doors and windows are sealed properly, and your home’s insulation is sufficient. Furthermore, you can turn on your home’s circulating fan to move warm air down to lower levels because heat rises. Generally heat downstairs will eventually drift upwards with the help of a centralized fan.

Heat Cycling – Home Heating Repair #2

If your furnace is turning on and off far more often than usual, it is sometimes considered “heat cycling”. Heat cycling lowers system efficiency and raises your utility bill! Heat cycling can indicate a dirty blower motor or filter, or it could be the result of a malfunctioning thermostat. Changing your furnace filter on a regular basis and calling a professional HVAC technician can help you pinpoint the problem. Preventing heat cycling can save you money on your monthly heating bill.

No Heat – Home Heating Repair #3

No heat at all – during extreme winter weather this is the most troublesome home heating repair! It can be alarming to wake up to no heat in your home. With the temperature dropping to dangerous levels at night this is definitely something you should avoid to keep your family safe and warm.

If your furnace is having a problem producing any heat at all it may be a number of things. It could be a faulty thermostat or the pilot light is not lit. Or maybe the main burner or a control board or flame sensor has quit working properly and may need to be replaced. An HVAC professional from Ignite Heating can identify the problem and offer the best solution. We repair all makes and models and can locate the parts to repair your furnace if necessary. It may even be time to replace your furnace if a repair solution is not an option. We offer free quotes on furnace replacements and can recommend the best home heating system for your home. An HVAC Contractor – Your Heating & Cooling Expert

Choosing an HVAC contractor can be a daunting task. If you work with the right company, then the process of repairing your HVAC unit can be a smooth and effortless process. Did you know that your energy efficiency can suffer if your HVAC system isn’t installed properly? And if you choose the wrong HVAC company to repair your system, you could end up with an “HVAC Wall of Shame” story to tell your friends and neighbours at the next block party (who wants that?!).

Whether your home’s heating and/or cooling system is in need of routine maintenance, emergency repairs or a total replacement, selecting a qualified HVAC contractor is an important decision! To ensure you hire a qualified professional that best fits your job, here are a few simple tips to help you find the best HVAC contractor for your needs.

Choose The Right HVAC Contractor With These 5 Simple Tips:

HVAC Contractor Selection

Tip #1 Get A Referral

Ask neighbors, friends, and family for referrals for reliable HVAC contractors in your area. Referrals can give a homeowner insight as to the type of experience they can expect from a particular contractor.

Tip #2 Read Reviews

A quick glance at the number of review stars can often be misleading. Be sure to read the written comments and look for HVAC contractors with a good reputation for value, quality and customer service. Read Ignite Heating & Air Conditioning Ltd. reviews on Google here! We also have great reviews on Yelp and Facebook!

Tip #3 Locate An Authorized Dealer

If you’re looking at a particular brand of furnace, check out the manufacturer’s website for recommendations of a local dealer and/or HVAC contractor in your area. For Napoleon products, search here to find an authorized dealer in your area. Ignite Heating is an authorized dealer of Napoleon products!

Tip #4 Look At Reliability

Check out how long the HVAC Contractor has been in business. If a company has been around for a long period of time, it usually indicates that they are well established, familiar with their service area, knowledgeable about the needs of their client base, and have very capable and skilled technicians with many years of experience. Research the history of the contractor and the business.

Tip #5 Don’t Always Go With The Lowest Bid

Sometimes, a lower price doesn’t always mean it should be your first choice. Paying a little bit more will often result in better equipment and service from your chosen company. If there are huge discrepancies in price from one contractor to another, ask them why their prices are set that way. For example, higher prices can indicate better quality of equipment, training of technicians, and above average maintenance agreements.

Tip #5 Call Ignite Heating!
