Home Heating Emergency!

hvac home heating emergency - the three most common emergencies can be avoided
Add an HVAC Professional (Ignite Heating) to your contact list in case of emergency.

Congratulations, you survived the latest Alberta cold snap! Did your home heating system struggle? Could your furnace keep your home nice and warm? Did you suffer from a home heating emergency? Let’s look at the three most common HVAC heating emergencies that you might want to avoid next time we get a burst of cold Alberta winter weather.

⚠️ Emergency #1: Plugged Air Intake Vent

To work properly, your furnace needs adequate airflow. If your furnace is having problems starting, or seems to be trying to start but can’t, a blocked airflow from the intake pipe could be the culprit. Even if you aren’t having trouble with your furnace, it’s a good idea to check your intake before the cold weather arrives. Most often snow and ice are the typical causes for blocked air intake vents, and it’s a common reason to cause your furnace to stop running. Having a properly installed fresh air intake is the first step to improving your home’s indoor air quality. We suggest you double check that your fresh air intake is clean and free of snow and ice to keep your furnace running smoothly all winter.

⚠️ Emergency #2: Dirty Furnace Filter

How long has it been since you last changed your furnace filter? Replacing your filter on a regular schedule will keep your furnace working at it’s optimal performance. A clean air filter not only improves your indoor air quality, but it can also improve your heating and cooling system’s airflow and efficiency. This can help lower your utility bill and extend the life of your equipment. If your filter gets too dirty, it can block the return air flow to the furnace. It’s like putting a blanket over your head and asking you to breath normally! So change your filter on a schedule (hint: we recommend changing your filter every 3 months or as recommended by your equipment manufacturer manual) to keep your furnace running smoothly.

⚠️ Emergency #3: Failing Flame Sensor

No heat at all – during extreme winter weather this is the most troublesome home heating emergency! It can be alarming to wake up to no heat in your home. With the temperature dropping to dangerous levels at night this is definitely something you should avoid to keep your family safe and warm.

If your furnace keeps shutting down and cannot provide heat to the entire house, it may be because your flame sensor is failing. There are three signs of a bad flame sensor. First, the furnace starts working but then quickly shuts down – also known as “short cycling”. Second, there could be cracks in the porcelain of the flame sensor which can cause it to quit working properly. Finally, if the flame sensor is corroded or needs cleaning it could stop functioning all together.

Home Heating Repairs – A Common Winter Issue

common winter home heating repairs

Did you notice that our Alberta winter weather is here, and the temperature outside has dropped considerably? As a result you may be faced with some unavoidable home heating repairs! With this cold snap set to bring us record-setting -40 lows, our freezing winter weather presents some common challenges for the home heating system trying it’s best to keep you warm. Let’s take a closer look at a few common winter home heating repairs:

Inconsistent Heat – Home Heating Repair #1

Most likely you prefer your whole house to be heated evenly. Generally each room should be comfortably warm. However, a malfunctioning heating system could be causing one room to be chilly while another room feels hot. To prevent this from happening you can make sure your doors and windows are sealed properly, and your home’s insulation is sufficient. Furthermore, you can turn on your home’s circulating fan to move warm air down to lower levels because heat rises. Generally heat downstairs will eventually drift upwards with the help of a centralized fan.

Heat Cycling – Home Heating Repair #2

If your furnace is turning on and off far more often than usual, it is sometimes considered “heat cycling”. Heat cycling lowers system efficiency and raises your utility bill! Heat cycling can indicate a dirty blower motor or filter, or it could be the result of a malfunctioning thermostat. Changing your furnace filter on a regular basis and calling a professional HVAC technician can help you pinpoint the problem. Preventing heat cycling can save you money on your monthly heating bill.

No Heat – Home Heating Repair #3

No heat at all – during extreme winter weather this is the most troublesome home heating repair! It can be alarming to wake up to no heat in your home. With the temperature dropping to dangerous levels at night this is definitely something you should avoid to keep your family safe and warm.

If your furnace is having a problem producing any heat at all it may be a number of things. It could be a faulty thermostat or the pilot light is not lit. Or maybe the main burner or a control board or flame sensor has quit working properly and may need to be replaced. An HVAC professional from Ignite Heating can identify the problem and offer the best solution. We repair all makes and models and can locate the parts to repair your furnace if necessary. It may even be time to replace your furnace if a repair solution is not an option. We offer free quotes on furnace replacements and can recommend the best home heating system for your home. Contact Ignite Heating today by calling (780) 919-4916 or fill out the contact form here.

An HVAC Contractor – Your Heating & Cooling Expert

Choosing an HVAC contractor can be a daunting task. If you work with the right company, then the process of repairing your HVAC unit can be a smooth and effortless process. Did you know that your energy efficiency can suffer if your HVAC system isn’t installed properly? And if you choose the wrong HVAC company to repair your system, you could end up with an “HVAC Wall of Shame” story to tell your friends and neighbours at the next block party (who wants that?!).

How To Choose The Right HVAC Contractor
How To Choose The Right HVAC Contractor

Whether your home’s heating and/or cooling system is in need of routine maintenance, emergency repairs or a total replacement, selecting a qualified HVAC contractor is an important decision! To ensure you hire a qualified professional that best fits your job, here are a few simple tips to help you find the best HVAC contractor for your needs.

Choose The Right HVAC Contractor With These 5 Simple Tips:

HVAC Contractor Selection

Tip #1 Get A Referral

Ask neighbors, friends, and family for referrals for reliable HVAC contractors in your area. Referrals can give a homeowner insight as to the type of experience they can expect from a particular contractor.

Tip #2 Read Reviews

A quick glance at the number of review stars can often be misleading. Be sure to read the written comments and look for HVAC contractors with a good reputation for value, quality and customer service. Read Ignite Heating & Air Conditioning Ltd. reviews on Google here! We also have great reviews on Yelp and Facebook!

Tip #3 Locate An Authorized Dealer

If you’re looking at a particular brand of furnace, check out the manufacturer’s website for recommendations of a local dealer and/or HVAC contractor in your area. For Napoleon products, search here to find an authorized dealer in your area. Ignite Heating is an authorized dealer of Napoleon products!

Tip #4 Look At Reliability

Check out how long the HVAC Contractor has been in business. If a company has been around for a long period of time, it usually indicates that they are well established, familiar with their service area, knowledgeable about the needs of their client base, and have very capable and skilled technicians with many years of experience. Research the history of the contractor and the business.

Tip #5 Don’t Always Go With The Lowest Bid

Sometimes, a lower price doesn’t always mean it should be your first choice. Paying a little bit more will often result in better equipment and service from your chosen company. If there are huge discrepancies in price from one contractor to another, ask them why their prices are set that way. For example, higher prices can indicate better quality of equipment, training of technicians, and above average maintenance agreements.

Tip #5 Call Ignite Heating!

  • review rating 5  We contacted ignite heating to replace a bathroom fan, replace a thermostat. and do a general check of the furnace in our 1950's bungalow. After a bit of back and forth on scheduling the team that arrived was great. Very efficient and courteous they completed all the jobs and swept/vacuumed after themselves. We really appreciated that they took us through the different aspects of our furnace and what each of the tests were for and specifics of the results. We would use them for any future heating needs.

  • review rating 5  When I had three companies come in to check if I needed a new furnace or if I should service my current one, this was the only company that told me that I have one of the best ‘old fashioned’ furnaces & that I should keep it as long as I can. Ignite is a very reliable and trustworthy. They have installed my airconditioning since & they are the ones I call when I need the furnace serviced.

Get (Your Furnace) In Tip-Top Shape

Getting in shape, losing weight or exercising more are some of the top Canadian New Year’s resolutions. Over 54% of Canadians want to improve their physical well-being, so you are not alone if this is your goal for 2020. However, when it comes to your home heating and cooling system, this resolution can apply as well. This annual check-up can get your furnace back in tip-top condition and keep it running smoothly throughout the new year. Or maybe you need a new furnace? Out with the old, in with the new! HVAC New Year’s Resolution #2:

Reduce Your Environmental Footprint

If everyone committed to this resolution, our world would thank us at the end of the year. This may seem a bit daunting at first, but there are simple ways in which you can reduce your personal environmental footprint. By implementing a few small changes you can make a BIG difference. How about requesting paperless billing from your gas or electric company? Maybe recycle more – or commit to buying products in compostable or recyclable packaging? What about getting a more energy efficient furnace or air-conditioner for your home? A new high-efficiency heating or cooling unit could save you hundreds of dollars on your utility bills each month! Did you know that Napoleon’s EnerSave ECM motor reduces electrical consumption by up to 80% over conventional blower motors? Now, that’s a change that our environment will thank us for!

HVAC New Year’s Resolution #3:

Save More Money On Your Heating Bill

If your furnace or heating system is more than 10 years old, it probably has an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of 55-70%. Due to this lower AFUE, your heating unit is not very efficient and is costing you way more money each month. As the furnace ages, it need to run longer to maintain the same amount of heat which causes your gas and electric bills to increase steadily, year after year. With regular maintenance by a certified HVAC technician, you can help increase the life of your home heating system. If your furnace is nearing the end of its life, we can help you choose the right new high-efficiency furnace with an AFUE of 95-97%…and that can save you a LOT of money in 2020.

If you’re thinking about a new furnace for 2020, give us a call. Or if your furnace needs a clean & check, we can do that as well. Our professional HVAC technicians can help you meet your HVAC New Year’s resolutions in 2020. Your comfort is our concern! Call us at (780) 919-4916 or contact us today.

Don’t Be Scared of Furnace Repairs

BOO! FURNACE REPAIRS! HVAC equipment can be complex, expensive, and like any high-performing system, needs occasional repairing. In the spirit of Halloween, we wanted to go over some of the scariest things that can happen to your HVAC unit as a result of improper maintenance – which can lead to even scarier results! Save money and increase your heating system’s efficiency and comfort by having a trained professional complete furnace repairs for you if you find yourself facing one of these scenarios.

SCARY SCENARIO #1: Dirty Filter

Dust and allergens can accumulate on your filter over time, which restricts the airflow and can cause your furnace to work harder to pull the air through. By replacing your furnace filter regularly, you can improve your overall efficiency of the system. This is a simple furnace repair that homeowners can complete themselves.

SCARY SCENARIO #2: Dirty Flame Sensor

A furnace flame sensor is a specialized safety component that is located inside of the burner assembly of a furnace. It detects and confirms whether or not there is a flame burning inside of the furnace. If no flame is detected, the flame sensor will shut off the furnace to avoid a potentially dangerous gas leak into the home! One of the biggest problems with furnace flame sensors is that they can sometimes become dirty which causes them to not function properly. Regular HVAC maintenance by a professional HVAC technician can help prevent this from happening. At Ignite we carry parts for many different models of furnaces and will supply the flame sensor your furnace requires to repair your furnace.

SCARY SCENARIO #3: Pressure Switch Failure

A pressure switch in your furnace is used as a safety mechanism. It is there to confirm the unit is drafting properly. If the unit is not drafting properly, then it does not operate as efficiently and creates a safety risk by not removing unwanted gases that can make your home unsafe. One of the most common service calls we receive is from homeowners needing to replace their pressure switch because like many furnace components, the pressure switch is not an item you can typically find at a big box store like Home Depot. If the pressure switch connections have not been maintained or cleaned this can cause the pressure switch to fail and this is a common furnace repair that will keep your furnace in tip-top condition.

Contact a qualified HVAC professional at Ignite Heating & Air Conditioning Ltd. today to help you avoid these common scary furnace repairs. Let us help you troubleshoot and fix your scary furnace problems. Our technicians are available 24/7, and can be reached by calling (780) 919-4916 or contact us here.
