Don’t Be Scared of Furnace Repairs

BOO! FURNACE REPAIRS! HVAC equipment can be complex, expensive, and like any high-performing system, needs occasional repairing. In the spirit of Halloween, we wanted to go over some of the scariest things that can happen to your HVAC unit as a result of improper maintenance – which can lead to even scarier results! Save money and increase your heating system’s efficiency and comfort by having a trained professional complete furnace repairs for you if you find yourself facing one of these scenarios.

SCARY SCENARIO #1: Dirty Filter

Dust and allergens can accumulate on your filter over time, which restricts the airflow and can cause your furnace to work harder to pull the air through. By replacing your furnace filter regularly, you can improve your overall efficiency of the system. This is a simple furnace repair that homeowners can complete themselves.

SCARY SCENARIO #2: Dirty Flame Sensor

A furnace flame sensor is a specialized safety component that is located inside of the burner assembly of a furnace. It detects and confirms whether or not there is a flame burning inside of the furnace. If no flame is detected, the flame sensor will shut off the furnace to avoid a potentially dangerous gas leak into the home! One of the biggest problems with furnace flame sensors is that they can sometimes become dirty which causes them to not function properly. Regular HVAC maintenance by a professional HVAC technician can help prevent this from happening. At Ignite we carry parts for many different models of furnaces and will supply the flame sensor your furnace requires to repair your furnace.

SCARY SCENARIO #3: Pressure Switch Failure

A pressure switch in your furnace is used as a safety mechanism. It is there to confirm the unit is drafting properly. If the unit is not drafting properly, then it does not operate as efficiently and creates a safety risk by not removing unwanted gases that can make your home unsafe. One of the most common service calls we receive is from homeowners needing to replace their pressure switch because like many furnace components, the pressure switch is not an item you can typically find at a big box store like Home Depot. If the pressure switch connections have not been maintained or cleaned this can cause the pressure switch to fail and this is a common furnace repair that will keep your furnace in tip-top condition.

Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air?

Brrr! Did you notice your furnace fan is running but there is COLD air coming out of your vents? Actually, there are a few reasons this could be happening – let us troubleshoot your problem – here are a few steps you can take if your furnace is blowing cold air:

#1 Wait for a minute for your furnace to warm up.

It is normal for cool air to emerge from the vents when your older style furnace first starts up, so wait a minute or two to see if the air eventually warms up.

#2 Check your thermostat.

Make sure your fan switch on your thermostat is set to “auto” rather than “on”. When it is set to “on”, the furnace will blow continually, even when the furnace isn’t actually heating air. The problem might be a simple thermostat setting – an easy fix! Also look for the primary exhaust fan switch in your home – these are typically found in a hallway or installed higher than normal light switches. Once you flip that switch, a bathroom fan will turn on and the furnace will run normally again.

#3 Change the furnace filter.

A dirty air filter may restrict airflow into your furnace and this may cause your furnace to overheat or cause a safety control to shut off the burners. This is actually a preventative measure to protect your furnace from overheating and causing any damage. So change your filter if it’s dirty. If you want a hassle-free way to keep track of when to change your furnace filter on a schedule, click here for more information about our Ignite Maintenance Club – we can help you with annual furnace maintenance which will help you lower your energy bills, reduce the number of repairs, lower the risk of surprise breakdowns and improve your equipment life. #4 Clean your flame sensor.

Pilotless ignition furnaces use a flame sensor to keep the furnace burning once it starts up. If your flame sensor is either defective or dirty then your furnace will turn on and then stop shortly after. If you are familiar with furnace components you can likely clean your flame sensor yourself using a fine abrasive pad. If it is faulty then you will need to replace the flame sensor.

5 reasons why we install Napoleon furnaces

1) 100% Canadian

Napoleon products are made in over 1,200,000 square feet of manufacturing space in Barrie, Ontario. Napoleon is the only furnace and air conditioner to be made 100% in Canada.

2) Competitive Warranty Included.

Napoleon furnaces have a Lifetime Heat Exchangers Limited Warranty. This means Napoleon will replace the heat exchangers if they fail during the owner’s lifetime

Napoleon furnaces also come with:

  • 10 Year Unit Replacement Heat Exchanger Limited Warranty: Napoleon will replace the whole furnace if the heat exchangers fail within the first 10 years (this is upgraded to 15 years for the 9700 Series Furnace)
  • 10 Year Parts Limited Warranty: Napoleon will replace the part if it fails within the first 10 years
  • At Ignite we also provide a 10 year labour warranty on the Napoleon Furnace we install.

3) Increased Efficiency

The 9700 and 9600 series furnaces are a two-stage furnace, which allows for longer calls at 60% of full capacity – this helps to eliminate “cool spots” in your house as there is more warm air moving in your house for a longer period of time.

Napoleon furnaces come with a variable speed blower which increases the amount of warm air circulating through the ducting system to allow hot air to mix with cold air to ensure that there is no cold air coming out of your supply ducts.

Napoleon furnaces have an Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM) blower motor will save over 80% in energy cost over your PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) when running your furnace fan.

 4) Innovative Design

Napoleon’s 9700 series furnace has multiple patents that provide standard features none of the current furnace makers offer:

  • Vortex turbulator heat exchanger: maximizes the flue gases time in the heat exchanger and is 100*F hotter than a conventional heat exchanger.
  • Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger to last longer
  • SureView Burner System: offers a unique view of the flames in operation.
  • Built in LED lights that automatically turn on when the blower door is opened.
  • Ultra Violet Light Air Purifier: built in to the furnace to improve air quality

5) Competitive Pricing

Napoleon is very competitively priced compared to similar alternatives – where many other manufacturers offer the two-stage as an upgrade this is standard in the Napoleon 9600 and 9700 Series.
